What Is a VA Loan Certificate of Eligibility (COE)?

Understanding the VA Loan Certificate of Eligibility (COE)

What Is a COE?

The Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is an official document from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that confirms your eligibility for a VA home loan. It verifies that you meet the necessary service requirements, allowing lenders to proceed with your VA loan application.

Why Is the COE Important?

The COE not only confirms your eligibility but also details your available VA loan entitlement and indicates whether you’re exempt from the VA funding fee. This information helps lenders determine the loan amount for which you qualify and any associated costs.

Who Is Eligible for a COE?

  • Active-duty service members with at least 90 continuous days of service.
  • Veterans who meet specific service requirements, typically 90 days during wartime or 181 days during peacetime.
  • National Guard or Reserve members with at least six years of honorable service or 90 days of active-duty service under Title 10 orders.
  • Surviving spouses of Veterans who died in service or from a service-connected disability.

How to Obtain Your COE

  1. Through Your Lender: As a VA-approved lender, I can often retrieve your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) instantly through the VA’s online portal.
  2. Online via VA.gov: You can request your COE through the VA’s eBenefits portal.
  3. By Mail: Complete VA Form 26-1880 and mail it to the address specified on the form. Note that this method may take longer.
